Most everyone probably tried a frappe in a coffee shop. It’s perfect on a hot summer’s day. The slowly melting ice, the addicting taste of coffee… but you don’t always have a coffee shop around here. In comes this easy instant coffee recipe. No need for any coffee machines. All you need is a blender.

What is a Frappe?

Basically, a Frappe is a whipped cold coffee drink. The original Greek version doesn’t use ice. Instead, it uses cold water and the drink is more liquid. I guess Starbucks came up with the ice version and called it Frappuccino. And I guess there is controvercy regarding what a real Frappe is (you can read about it in this article: What is a Frappe?). Anyway, here is my version of this drink and whatever the actual name, this stuff is great.

Ingredients for Instant Coffee Frappe

  • Ice – I use crushed ice from my fridge.
  • Instant Coffee – any kind should work. We love the Nescafe Gold coffee. It’s the only instant coffee we actually like.
  • Raw brown sugar – can also use normal white sugar if only that is available.
  • Milk or cream – I use milk, but cream can be used for a creamier consistency.

How to Make this Frappe

Start off with putting your ice into a blender. I only have a small smoothie blender, so I like to use crushed ice from my fridge (instead of the big pieces).

If you have a more powerful blender, normal sized ice will work too.

Sprinkle the brown sugar on the top of the ice, followed by the instant coffee. If you’d like your frappe to have a stronger coffee taste, add more instant coffee.

Add the milk to the ice and coffee, then cover and blend until smooth.

Once done, transfer to a glass and enjoy.

How to Serve this Frappe

The best way to serve this is with a straw as you get the taste of the coffee from the bottom as the ice slowly melts. I love using my glass straws for this!

However, you can also sip from the glass directly, if that’s what you want. Just swish it around once in a while.

Also, totally optional, but throw some whipped cream on the top for a more richer flavor and consistency. And if you’d like a coffee shop-type presentation 😊.

Tips and Tricks for Making

My blender is not that powerful, so I have to add more liquid when blending ice. So I usually add about 1/8 cup more milk when blending. So if your drink is too stiff or not blending well, add a bit more liquid.

Recommended Tools

You’ll need a blender to make this. I have a small, smoothie blender and it works fine (I don’t like buying extra tools that I don’t use regularly so one blender is enough).

A pack of glass straws is also great (or these awesome drinking glasses come with glass straws if you’re looking for both).
