I first tried this rice when an Ethiopian friend made it for us at my house. I was hooked right away. It’s just so fluffy and buttery and full of flavor. It goes so well with a salad and almost any kind of meat, but especially grilled or fried chicken. The best part, it takes almost no time to make it.

Give it a try next time you’re looking to elevate your rice game.

Ingredients for Spiced Rice

Rice – I like using Basmati Rice for this recipe, but any kind of white rice will work.

Water – plain, cold water. Same amount as the rice.

Spices – In this recipe I used curry powder, turmeric powder, ground coriander, ground cumin, sweet paprika and salt.

Olive oil and butter – for toasting the spices and for cooking the rice

How to Make Spiced Rice

Start off by measuring out the spices into a mixing bowl and washing the rice. I love using a fine mesh sieve to wash the rice as it makes it so so easy. Wash until the water is clear for the most part.

Heat up the oil and butter in a small saucepan. Add in the spices and toast them for 10-15 seconds. Add the washed rice and mix everything well.

Add the water and bring to a simmer mixing all the while.

Cover with a lid, reduce the heat to lowest setting and set the timer for 15 minutes.

Immediately remove from heat once done.

Fluff up the rice using a fork or spoon.

Serve hot.

Tips and Tricks for Making Spiced Rice

My biggest tip for making rice with my recipes is to reduce the heat and set the timer as soon as you begin to see the bubbles forming and remove from heat as soon as the cooking time is up. Otherwise, you risk the rice burning to the bottom of the pan. However, you might need to test this with your stove as mine seems to be quite strong even on the lowest setting.

How to Store and Reheat

Once the rice has cooled, store it in a covered container in the fridge. I usually just keep it in the same saucepan I cooked it in.

To re-heat, add a bit of water to the saucepan and heat on lowest settings on the stove. The water prevents the rice from burning. Alternatively, use a microwave to reheat until warm.

Recommended Tools

The only tools you’ll need is a saucepan (I’ve had this cooking set from Silit for over a decade and love it!) with a lid and measuring cups and spoon to measure out the spices and rice and water.
